Fashion Fundamentals: Fall Outerwear

Happy September!

Fall is my absolute favorite season for fashion.  I have a pretty classic wardrobe, for the most part, and Fall completely welcomes a perfectly classic palette.  In anticipation of our subdivision’s annual garage sale, I recently rummaged through my closet and pulled out any and everything I don’t love.  I cleared out almost half of my closet!  Yep.  It was very liberating.  Eventually, I want to be able to look in my closet and easily put an outfit together with what I see in front of me…especially since I am trying to get ready every morning for work with a little 3-year-old monkey pulling on my leg.

Enter Fashion Fundamentals.  This new series will highlight my favorite classic pieces that you can easily build upon for a effortless daily look.  Selfishly, this is for me, too.  I need a closet refresh in a major way, and I can’t wait to share what is on my shopping list.

First up is my first of two Fall Outerwear installments.

A classic tan trench coat is the perfect fall piece.  It works with jeans or a suit, on a brisk morning and in the rain.  Even Jackie O thinks so.  Try this leather trimmed number from Express or this classic choice from JCrew Factory.

For those more casual street-style looks, grab an army green military jacket.  As you transition from summer to fall, you can rock this jacket with jeans, tailored black pants (like Olivia here), a flirty skirt, or even over a dress.  I really like this one from Old Navy and this more cropped version from Nordstrom.

Adding a black leather motorcycle jacket to your wardrobe can do you no wrong.  Just like this one Kate Hudson is wearing with ripped skinny jeans, a black motorcycle jacket adds instant funk to a night out.  Pair with jeans, a basic white tee and great booties or over a fun patterned midi skirt.  This H&M jacket is definitely worth the price and this one from anthropologie is effortlessly cool.

I hope these posts are helpful as you are starting to stock your closet for cooler weather.  Each piece can provide you with many different classic looks and each is meant to last for more than one season.
